Acceptance and Expectance of the Unexpected

“In general, purple cows live in fields where it’s possible to reinvent what people expect.”  Seth Godin

I love this quote!  I read it on Twitter from the blog of Seth Godin. The post was about achieving perfection.  This particular part grabbed ahold of my brain and wouldn’t let go.  I suppose because as we age we forget that it is important to reinvent.  It is important to forget about what people expect.  Or, rather, we have become so aware of what people expect and accept, including ourselves, that we forget to look for, celebrate, and embrace the unexpected.  So, of course I jumped to education.

What would be unexpected in school? “In general, purple cows live in fields where it’s possible to reinvent what people expect.”  ..and students can find passion and joy in school/learning.  And teachers can create more passion and joy by fueling those fires within their students by learning and teaching with them, together as colleagues.  It is possible to reinvent what people expect, and therefore accept, but you must be willing to accept and expect the unexpected, even invite it.

It is possible to reinvent the expected, as well as raise the bar for what is accepted.  It is possible to invent anew.  The ideas are not all used up, purple cows do exist; an educational system that is designed to build, nurture and foster joy and passion in kids and adults is possible.  Believing is a start; believing in yourself and the ideas that you create; believing in others and their ideas; believing that there is an unexpectedly wonderful fantastical world right in front of us.   Can joy and passion in learning be so far behind?  “If you build it they will come.”  Can an educational system that honors and celebrates the child, the whole child truly be built?   Can an educational system that honors and celebrates passion and joy in learning and creating be so difficult to achieve? If I believe it, it can be so.  And, I have learned, if I believe it others do also.  I will accept the unexpected, create opportunities for it to flourish and surprise.

Loving learning for its own sake is unexpected.  That needs to be the expected so that it can be accepted. In order to appreciate the purple cows living in fields where it is possible to reinvent the unexpected, loving creativity and learning must be the expected.  “In general, purple cows live in fields where it’s possible to reinvent what people expect.”  Seth Godin …and students can find passion in school/learning.  And teachers can create more passion and joy by feeding their students with knowledge, problems to solve, opportunities to be challenged and challenging  because they~ teachers and students ~ will learn and teach together as colleagues.  It is possible to reinvent what people expect but you must be willing to accept and expect the unexpected.

What “unexpecteds” can you reinvent in the fields where purple cows live?
